The history of our church is entwined with the story of our savior Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ never named His church, leaving the adoption of a name for to those disciples whom he commissioned to teach all nations. Jesus Christ called his spiritual society, "My Church" (Mt. XVI, 18), or "the Church" (Mt. XVIII, 17).
In the first century AD St. Ignatius (50-107 AD) began using the Greek word "Katholicos" (universal) to describe the universality of the Church as established by Jesus Christ. The name was necessary in part to distinguish the Church of jesus Christ from the Jewish Synagogue and the Gnostic Temples. St. Ignatius was appointed Bishop of Antioch by St. Peter, the Bishop of Rome and it is in his writings that we find the word Catholic used for the first time to describe the Church of Jesus Christ.
The Catholic Church is the united church of Jesus Christ, with a unity so tight and so long-lived. Nowhere else in Christianity do we see such unity in Jesus Christ. Even St. Augustine, when speaking in his writings about the Church of Jesus Christ, calls it the Catholic Church 240 times. So do not worry!
